What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a harmful sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep. People who have sleep apnea experience repeated stops to their breathing during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times. This results to your brain and whole body not getting enough oxygen to nourish and restore it’s full functionality.
There are two types of sleep anea. Obstructive sleep anea, which is more common, is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep causing snoring. Central sleep apnea is when the airway is not blocked, but the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe.
What are the effects of Sleep Apnea?
If left untreated, sleep apnea may increase certain health risks. Some of these include:
- High blood pressure
- Stroke
- Heart failure, irregular heart beats, and heart attacks
- Diabetes
- Depression
- Worsening of ADHD
- Headaches
