What is Scaling and Root Planing?
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning below the gumline in order to treat gum disease. This simple procedure is performed by periodontists who are trained to diagnose and treat periodontal disease, oral inflammation, and cosmetic periodontal procedures. Scaling removes the plaque and tartar buildup from above and below the gumline. Root planing smoothes the tooth root and helps the gums reattach to the tooth.
Why would I need Scaling and Root Planing?
Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that builds up in your mouth. If your teeth aren’t cleaned well, plaque buildup forms and this bacteria can cause your gums to become inflamed. When this happens, your gums start receding away from the tooth and forms spaces called pockets. Plaque then gets trapped in these pockets and can no longer be removed with regular brushing. A general dentist may refer you to see a periodontist to have a deep cleaning in order to save your gums from gum disease. It is very important to visit your dentist at The Smilist Dental to have your teeth cleaned at least every 6 months to prevent periodontal disease.
