Preventative Dentistry: Protecting our Dental Health

dentures and floss and a toothbrush

Preventative dentistry is the proper care of oral health with the help of a hygienist or dentist to ensure that your oral health is the best it can be.

Preventative dentistry services include: professional dental cleanings every six months, routine dental exams and x-rays and oral cancer screenings. The exams conducted at the dentist are not only meant to look for early signs of cavities and gum disease. Your oral health is the gateway to your overall health and therefore your dental staff can identify early signs of serious medical conditions such as high blood pressure and stroke. Like most diseases, the earlier it is identified, the higher the chances of treating it and saving a life.

Every preventative plan and what providers offer is slightly different (ie – some include oral cancer screenings, while others don’t). Be sure to confirm with your dentist what is included through their office, as well as what your insurance covers annually, so you are prepared accordingly.

As much as your dental staff has a role to play in preventive care, you have to do most of the work. It is up to you to brush your teeth at least twice a day with proper technique, as well as floss and use mouthwash whenever possible.

Your dental staff will ask you to avoid sugary foods, especially if you are prone to cavities. Sometimes, they may provide you with a mouthguard to wear during the night if you grind your teeth. If you follow everything your dental staff says, you can be sure of better oral health and overall, improved general health.

Benefits of routine, preventative dental care will help when it comes to preventing gum disease (periodontitis), tooth decay, cavities, bad breath and other dental issues. Preventive care will also save you a lot of time and money in the long run, as by visiting the dentist regularly you can catch issues before they become a big problem and will require a larger treatment plan, which can cost a significant amount.

What others are saying about The Smilist Dental

“What a great experience! Everyone who works here is kind and caring. They take the time to explain what’s going on. They’re friendly. They make you feel taken care of. I couldn’t be happier with my experience, and I normally hate going to the dentist.”
