What is a Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges are used to replace missing teeth. A dental bridge is made up of two crowns that go over the adjacent teeth with a prosthetic tooth in the middle – forming a “bridge”. Bridges and crowns are used to mimic a healthy smile. They can be functional and aesthetic and they aid in restoring health and confidence in a patient’s smile. A traditional dental bridge is a false tooth attaching on each side of a dental crown.

Why would I need a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge would be necessary if a tooth is not stable enough to hold a dental crown on it’s own. If you have more than one missing tooth in your mouth, there would be little to no stability, meaning something more concrete and stable would need to take the place of the missing teeth. Dental bridges help restore the jaws proper functions like chewing and biting . This process, however, requires surrounding teeth to be stripped of enamel in order to hold the bridge. With a dental implant, the dentist only replaces the individual tooth that is generally stronger and permanent.
